Architectural Art, 52 panels

Artist: Stefan Knapp
Materials: Enamel paint on steel panels
Date: 1963
Dimensions: 8 feet/4 feet each panel

Knapp painted a mural that was formerly on the now- demolished Alexander’s department store in Paramus, New Jersey. The 280-panel artwork was sized at 200×50 feet (about 60×15 metres), and at the time of creation in 1963 was the largest mural in the world.

The treatment included removal of the deteriorated backing material from each panel, cleaning, removal of tar, removal of deteriorated installation hardware, chemical stabilization of the corroded steel, application of the protective coating on the back of each panel, design/manufacturing/and installation of the stabilizing system on the back of each panel, spot-application of protective coating on the areas of loss and spot-color-reconstruction and filling in losses of the enamel for visual integration.
